it was originally a Pagan holiday celebrating fertility, held at the beginning of spring. they would feast on rabbits (a symbol of fertility), hide eggs for their friends and family to find (another sign of fertility was finding eggs), and they would party for three days. having all kinds of festivities as well as sex (fertility holiday, duhh). but the christian church tried to expel Pagan beliefs so they stole the holiday for their own purposes basically saying "you can celebrate, just do it our way"
